MAKING THINGS CLEARER

This was published yesterday by Sam Smith on the Doing Low Carb Facebook page. As one who has received some nasty comments on my recipes I am so glad the definition of low Carb has been properly explained. Thank you Sam Smith.
“We’ve seen a fair amount of questions in the group, as well as some snarky comments because of confusion about the difference between doing low carb and doing keto. So I thought I’d try to clear this up a bit.
The term “low carb” can generally be applied to any way of eating where you reduce your overall carb consumption. The amount of carb restriction needed to produce weight loss varies from person to person.
Generally speaking doing low carb usually means reducing your carbohydrate intake to somewhere between 20 and 100 net carbs per day. I know that seems like a huge range, but if you’re used to eating 200-300 grams of carbs each day, reducing to 100 will produce results. The reality is you need to find the level of carb reduction that works best for you.
A low carb diet may be, but doesn’t have to be, a ketogenic diet. A ketogenic diet (keto diet) is one way of doing low carb. It’s high fat, moderate protein, low carb, and has very specific parameters that put your body into a state of ketosis where fat becomes your primary fuel source.
A Keto diet requires you to eat around 80% fat, 15% protein and 5% carbs. This is a major change in most ways of eating and produces a major change in the way your body works. It usually requires a period of adjustment where you might feel just awful. That does pass as your body switches over to burning fat for energy rather than carbs.
However, as popular as keto diets may be these days, they are not for everyone. Certain health conditions may make a keto diet unsafe for you, so if you are considering going keto, be sure to talk to your doctor in advance.
The bottom line is that you can reap significant weight loss and other health benefits by doing low carb. You need to do your research and decide what way of doing low carb is best for you. Whichever way you go, we’re glad you’re a member of our group, we offer you support, and wish you great success in your journey with us to a healthier life.”
